Suppose we can make an argument for saving money. And we can make an argument for investing. But if we can’t formulate an argument for generosity then I’m going to call out greed. An overdeveloped concept of money for myself and an undeveloped concept of money for others is a sure sign that money still rules in the heart.
I can make a better argument for generosity producing an income than I can for investing. Solomon said to diversify your investments because some of them will fail. But Jesus said if you are generous he will always take care of you. 50% chance to make money with investing vs 100% chance with giving should tell the mathematical mind which way to put their money.
So how do you find somewhere to give? Ask God. And then when he shows you an opportunity and you get greed squeeze feelings tell yourself to relax. It’s just a test.
Avoid ministries that don’t end up caring for Christians, the poor, the widows and the orphans. Avoid giving to big names who want to expand how wonderful their ministry is. Avoid people who ask too much. But don’t avoid people simply because they ask or simply because they need. If they didn’t need they wouldn’t ask. And if they didn’t ask you probably wouldn’t know.
Money is not designed to enrich our lives. It is designed to train us in Kingship. Saving, investing, giving and spending are the four arenas of this test. Pass all 4 and relax until the next variety of test God sends your way. We won’t be complete in Christ without such tests.
