Our calling in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 1

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:22, 23

The church, which is the body, is the fullness of Him who fills all in all. In verse 10 Paul explains that in Christ God is going to sum up all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth. All things are going to be brought together in Him. The angelic and the human will find their connectedness in Christ, and the gentile/Jew divide will find their connectedness in Christ. Then Paul explains at the last sentence of the chapter: The church is the fullness of Him who fills all in all. The church must be (be) full of the full one who will himself move to fill all things in every way. Our calling is that we are going to take the substance of the life of Jesus Christ and take part in him filling all things that are not currently filled with Him. Therefore we must ourselves be full of Him or else we are not “the fullness of Him who fills…”

Firstly our calling is to be empty of ourselves and full of Him. Secondly our calling is to be a means of the Full One filling us and Him filling all. Like a Zechariah 4 olive branch, a living branch flowing the life through us. What do we say to this? We must say, “empty me of myself. A clean vessel for the full one to fill.”
