Marrying the right bride

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

“He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.” 1 Kings 11:3.

Where Solomon put 700 (the number of fullness) brides into his palace and messed up by choosing the wrong brides, Christ, the new Solomon, will not be so foolish. Christ will only marry the approved bride, she who worships the Lord with all her heart, all her soul, all her mind and all her strength.

The type that Eve is also fits this imagery. Eve was supposed to have the wisdom to not choose the tree of knowledge, but in fact did not have the wisdom to choose the tree of life. Her role in the marriage was to not lead. Adam was that. Eve lead Adam into the tree of knowledge. She was supposed to be a fitting helpmeet for Adam and their life in Eden. She became a vessel of evil in the earth. She too is a type of what we can be to God. We are only a fitting vessel, a true helpmeet to our new Adam in the new garden if we know how to pass the tree of knowledge test and only eat the tree of life.

Finally, where Solomon had 300 concubines indicates that the king has a body for bridal responsibility and honor, and a body of bodies which are for service but not for honor. These daughters of Jerusalem are not for the purpose of uniting with Solomon, they are for a middle level relationship. Not commoners, but not bridal. They are second level holy to Solomon, but not qualified for oneness. They are not holy holy holy to him, but they are holy compared to the common people. Again the Bible speaks of those outside, and those inside by relationship, as in Revelation 11:1-3.

Again, King Solomon made the mistake of qualifying bridal members who were not worshippers. But the Father is seeking worshippers who will worship him in Spirit and in truth, and as such qualify for oneness with His Son. It is this washing of water with the word which the Son must occasion to help the bride become spotless and without wrinkle. Fully qualified, fully unifiable to the King, the Son of God.

Our journey is to allow the work of the preparation to happen to us by Spirit, who alone is capable of qualifying us from outer common profanity, through holy preparations of concubine love, and into final union and bridal oneness. We are not to grieve or quench the Spirit in any way. His work is not primarily through us. These observable works happen as a matter of fruit. But his primary work is to work in us, as a matter of transformation. The inward work of the Spirit becomes visible as fruit on us. May the Spirit work in us that which is pleasing to him, both to will and to work for the good pleasure of our bridegroom.
