“By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.”
2 Timothy 1:14
Remember those tender times? Those satisfying realizations of Christ? Those nuggets of truth that set you free? Well, the ones from the scriptures deserve their best place in your and my heart. Those deposits are part of our inheritance and need to be closely guarded.
Guarded from what? Guarded from whom? There is no enemy of a deeply spiritual revelation like the enemy of religion and the foe of questioning. As much as questioning is a tool to get to the bottom of a truth, questioning is also a tool to unseat those firmly seated. Further, religion is that experience which is not Christ, and it and its many authors and speakers work harder than the saints to derail those who have found the simplicity and purity of devotedness to Christ.
And how do they gain their entrance? Simple. We become dissatisfied and go looking for the next spiritual thrill. We go looking for a good book. We turn on a new podcast, YouTube sermon. And soon their lostness makes our stability seem unwise. What should thrill the human heart? What should satisfy it? Jesus. Not ideas about him or the faith that sprung up in his name. He himself. He himself is the fullness of God. Going looking elsewhere is our failure, and there are all too many false lovers willing to feed us their crockery and grant a false spirituality to end at a false destination.
Having once been seated in Christ, oh Galatians, who has bewitched you? None other than your own willingness to find satisfaction in any other place than Christ Himself. Should we have God dig that root out we may find ourselves eating once again at the eternal table, sharing lamb, bread and wine with the one who feeds us forever. Let him bring the book, speaker or conversation you need at the time of his appointment. And let all others keep their tree of knowledge in their own weedy garden away from the soil of our heart.
