Follow the lamb: a running after

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

“Draw me after you; let us run.”

Song of Solomon 1:4

The bridal imagery of the Song of Solomon can often be a little quizzical. The darling couple desires to chase each other and play catch me if you can. It is cute, and quaint, and somehow endearing. Consider though a much later passage from Revelation: “they will follow the Lamb wherever he goes.” Rev 7.

The bride is drawn toward her beloved and physically moves to be near to him. And the excitement of coming close breaks into a flat out run. An undignified pursuit of the one you are drawn to. The bride desiring her man with a force that is emotional and physical all at once. The only piece that is lacking is for the man to “draw” her after him.

That word, “draw”, has water imagery. To draw water, and also in magnetism. The idea that something is being pulled in a direction, and it is willing to go there. The bride desires to be drawn by her man because she will surely chase after him wherever he goes.

So we see that the special group of Revelation 7 have this bridal quality in them. They desire to be drawn by the Lamb and don’t seem to care where the pull impels them to go. They love him, and they will run after him in order to remain close. This nearness will produce and end times protection according to Rev 12.

When our faith moves beyond belief systems and idea clashes with the world order it will find itself in a pleasant field, being drawn by a master lover into realms of faith and pursuit that we have not yet experienced.
