Becoming one with the heart of God

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

David, a man after God’s own heart. 1 Samuel 13.

Perhaps the simplest test or check for our hearts is this phrase used of David. God sought for himself a king to be after God’s own heart. David demonstrated love for God in the sheepfold. But more pointedly for kingship, David demonstrated knowledge of what moved God.

God had a heart. David had a heart. Were they the same heart? Because when we have a heart for different things than the Lord we cannot say we have become one with him.

What does God have a heart for? What things burden his heart? The lost sheep. The bride made ready. The end of the era of sinners and sin, filling hell and condemning mankind. A holy priesthood. What about his Son? Each of these items are surely the heart of God. So it would stand then that they become school courses, curriculums if you will, that educate our hearts on the heart of God. We can ask God for his school program and he will administer it to us. Sharing your heart is a pleasure to a father and mentor.

The end of the age is the season of union by fire. The union of God and man will be completed as the man gains the heart of God in himself, and we learn to be like David, bearing the same burden of the Lord because he shared it with us. We become kingdom worthy through such exercises as these.
