The Word is the Man

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

“He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.” Revelation 19:13

The phrase and concept of the word of God does certainly get used a lot. Almost invariably we are talking about the Bible. We encourage people to “get into the word of God.” And to “share God’s word.” And other encouraging phrases. There are other verses that help us use these phrases to refer to the Bible, for sure.

But do we think that God wrote the book in time and space, hoping that the book would overtake the Son in focus and in definition? Certainly not. The Word of the Father now in flesh appearing must, as the carol says, must be come to and adored. Worshipping and giving great homage to the written word does not automatically give homage to the WordMan.

Here is how it works. At this moment each Christian has the Holy Spirit. Each of us have the exact same deposit of the fullness of Jesus in our inmost being. Paul says, be transformed by the renewing of our mind. Our mind, our soul, that part of us which is not the Spirit of God needs alignment and renewing. That part of us is dumb to the Spirit and desperately needs the written word of God to be definite and clear about life in the Spirit of Christ. But the written word, which has beginning, is less than the Word the Father is speaking. It is only helpful if it is clearing away the flesh and replacing it with Christ. If it is highlighting the Life of the Man and leading us to the Word, then the word is doing what it was designed to do.

The Man is coming with the name “The Word of God”. His message is himself. In his fullness is everything the Father hopes to bring to the world. The record of the past and future that is written down is needful to our souls every day that we might be more submitted to the Life He is in us. And once the shell renews to match the inner deposit, then we will be complete in Christ, lacking nothing. So be it!
