Eternal rewards aren’t things

by Daniel Mastrolonardo

“To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬ ‭

if we’re imagining eternal rewards as being riches, as though God is going to lavish on us some sort of wealth, are we then going to imagine some sort of heavenly shopping mall where at we can spend these riches? Are we going to go down to the Stuffmart of heaven and load up on endless amounts of stuff? Because if we start thinking about rewards as “things” we are going to very quickly fall into a trap of human anticipation about the way of heaven.

When Paul speaks of the riches of Christ it is our responsibility to reject earthly materialism. The reason this matters is because if the riches of Christ are simply the riches of himself then we need to acknowledge that we have access to the riches of himself already. And so we find that unless we get a taste of the richness that is in him and learn to be satisfied in him already then we are not going to set ourselves up for a coming age that will make precious metals as common as rocks. In that age, what will the true riches be? Who will the wealthy people be? What else could it be except those who became rich in Christ Jesus. And so Paul says that we have access to every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus already, Ephesians 1.

Unless we favor the flavor of fullness in Christ now it will not bless us to have the measure of God later.
