“Flee from the midst of Babylon; let every one save his life! Be not cut off in her punishment, for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance, the repayment he is rendering her.”
Jeremiah 51:6
Babylon conquered every religion. It conquered every people and every land. The reason it conquered the holy people is because they were no longer holy to the Lord, and their religion was powerless to stop the invasion. God appointed Babylon to conquer and so they did. Later, God judged Babylon for murdering and conquering God’s people. The judger became judged and all fell into judgement.
The end of the age will be similar. The permeating reach of Babylon has underpinned the church and has undermined her faith. Babylon has once again conquered every land and every religion. Only a remnant remains. Babylon is what you get when the Lord isn’t enough for you, and exile from comfort is the consequence. But in Revelation 18 we read about the judgment on Babylon, and the liberation of the holy people once again. Surely this repeated imagery is ours to be encouraged by. That although Babylon is so great today, soon she will be a forgotten enemy of God, and the people, humble now, will take their place in the land. May it be so with us.
